G1 - Enhance academic performance:
To enhance academic performance, the Graduate School of Applied English strives to maintain a high quality of teaching, promote research performance of both its faculty and students, and nurture a culture for professional growth.
Obj 1.1 - The faculty of the Graduate School of Applied English will consist of well-trained teachers of various educational backgrounds in Applied Linguistics.
Obj 1.2 - Research is valued and encouraged for both faculty members and graduate students.
Obj 1.3 - Both process and outcome evaluations of teaching will be conducted to maintain quality teaching and learning.
Obj 1.4 - The Graduate program in Applied English will nurture a technical culture for both staff members and students that encourages sharing and caring and, hence, helps promote quality teaching and research.
G 2 - Equip students with professional knowledge with a focus on its application to practice:
The Graduate School of Applied English will provide a theory-based curriculum with a plethora of opportunities for applying theory into practice both in class and off-campus. The curriculum will also be reviewed and modified annually on the basis of needs.
Obj 2.1 - The curriculum of the Graduate School of Applied English, reflecting market needs, will emphasize both theory and practice.
Obj 2.2 - It will provide courses that require on-site learning and internships.
Obj 2.3 - Curriculum coherence will be achieved through communication among graduate course instructors and revealed in constantly reviewed course descriptions.
G 3 - Foster academic research skills:
Students of the MA TESOL/ESP program will be trained to construct their own theories in the process of making and finding answers to inquiries. Each will be required to share research ideas in class and at conferences and to complete a graduation paper.
Obj 3.1 - A sound advisory system will be enacted to guide students through difficulties in doing research.
Obj 3.2 - A series of research-related courses are provided to foster students' research skills.
Obj 3.3 - Invited talks on relevant research areas will be given regularly.
Obj 3.4 - All students are required to complete a graduation paper that is accepted as a journal paper or a conference paper.
G 4 - Strengthen students' professional and practical knowledge:
Ample opportunities will be given to students to make sense and connection of theories, personal experience, and contextual needs to strengthen their professional and practical knowledge.
Obj 4.1 - Annual two-day conference on TEFL and Applied English held by the Department of Applied English allows students to learn and share ideas related to their fields of interest.
Obj 4.2 - Students will be required to do on-site learning to translate theory into practice and discuss with the on-site learning instructor how to bridge the gap between theory and practice. |
